In 2021, 26 pedestrians lost their lives in fatal pedestrian accidents while they were innocently walking to their destination. According to the Portland Police, that number was the highest it has been in 50 years. Even when a pedestrian survives a crash, they will likely suffer serious injuries due to the fact that they are exposed and have so little protection. If you have been hurt, or have lost someone in a crash, our Portland pedestrian accident attorney can help you claim the damages you need to make a full recovery.
Types of Pedestrian Accidents
Pedestrians can become hurt in a number of different ways while they are on the roads. The most common types of accidents involving pedestrians are as follows:
- Accidents in crosswalks: The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) guidelines state that all major intersections have a crosswalk. It does not matter if these are marked with painted lines, flashing lights, or nothing at all. Drivers are required to stop and yield to pedestrians who are trying to cross the street, but motorists do not always comply with the law.
- Turning accidents: Intersections are very dangerous for pedestrians, as are side streets where motorists make turns. Drivers who speed or fail to pay attention are most likely to cause a pedestrian accident in these locations.
- Accidents in parking lots: Parking lots are one of the most common places for pedestrians to occur in Portland. Back-over accidents commonly occur in these areas and tragically, children are the ones who are most affected because they are more difficult for drivers to see.
- Sideswipe accidents: Not all areas of Portland have sidewalks and when that is the case, pedestrians should walk on the far side of the road. Unfortunately, this is still not entirely safe as a driver may become distracted or the road conditions may be poor, causing a driver to swerve and crash into a pedestrian.
