Car accidents always have the potential to be traumatic. It is best when the negligent driver carries high policy limits, but this is not always the case. After an automobile crash, you can file a claim for personal injury protection (PIP) benefits, and you can file a claim with the negligent driver’s insurance company. If the other driver does not have proper insurance there is a chance that your own underinsured policy can help you receive compensation for your injuries.
Below, our Portland uninsured/underinsured motorist accident attorney explains how you can claim the compensation you need.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance is Required in Portland
Like all states, all drivers in Portland must carry minimum amounts of auto insurance. The minimum requirements are as follows:
- $25,000 in bodily injury per person
- $50,000 in bodily injury per accident
- $20,000 per crash for property damage to others’ property
- $15,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) per person
- $25,000 in uninsured motorist protection per person
- $50,000 in uninsured motorist protection per accident
Due to the fact that uninsured motorist protection is required in Oregon, your own insurance company will provide coverage if you purchased the appropriate amounts. If you were the only one hurt in a crash, you can claim up to $25,000 from your own insurance company. If you were injured, and other passengers were injured as well, you would have to split $50,000 among the other injured individuals.
