Portland Police Use of Force for Individuals With Mental Illness

Public Input Requested on Settlement Agreement Regarding Police Use of Force

The Department of Justice found in 2012 that the Portland Police Bureau was using excessive force against individuals with mental illness, and that there was unjustified use of Tasers by the police. There is now a settlement agreement between the city and Justice officials that requires changes in the Portland Police Bureau’s use of force.

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Simon has opened the record to allow the general public to comment on the settlement. The record will remain open until February 26. This will allow members of the community to be heard and express their concerns about the current settlement agreement. Written comments can be submitted to Judge Simon’s office until the record closes on February 26.

A final hearing in this matter is set before Judge Simon on March 24.
