When shopping for sunscreen, there are a variety of options. In addition to SPF, there are also different types of ultraviolet protection. According to the FDA, sunburn is primarily caused by UVB radiation. Both UVA and UVB radiation can cause sunburn and skin cancer.
Sunscreen that is labeled “broad spectrum” or with an SPF of 15 or higher will help prevent sunburn, as well as skin cancer and premature skin aging. Sunscreens not labeled “broad spectrum” or with an SPF of lower than 15 are only helpful against sunburn, not the other potential harm of the radiation.
Before choosing a sunscreen for you or your family, make sure to check the label to make sure you are receiving the protection you need.
