US Justice Department to Recognize Utah Gay Marriages
The US Justice department announced that it will recognize, for federal law purposes, the marriages of same sex couples in Utah. As noted in a previous blog post, the US Supreme Court halted the issuance of marriage licenses to same sex couples in Utah last week. However, the US Justice department has made clear that marriages that occurred before this decision will be recognized for federal law purposes.
While the US Justice department will recognize these marriages, the State of Utah has made clear that the state will not allow same sex couples to file joint state tax returns.
